  ST. BEDE'S COLLEGE REPORT 2009-2010    
 

College reopened after the winter holidays on 10th February with the B.Sc students giving their university practical exams. On the 2nd March, Class XII started their CBSE Board exams. The college was inspected by the Department of Education, HP for the purpose of starting new courses like PGDCA, B.Com, B.Sc. Microbiology (H) B.Sc. Biotechnology (H) in the college. The team left very satisfied and later we obtained the NOC from the Govt. Now we have them as the full fledged Degree Courses. We also made tireless efforts to start MBA in the college. However, it could not be materialized. We are still working on it, hoping for the best.

The teachers training Department had their annual Art and Craft exhibition for two days with Dr. O.P. Sharma the Director of Higher education (HP) and Dr. Chaman Lal Gupta, the Chairman of HP Board as chief guests. They were highly appreciative of the amazing display and hard work of the teacher trainees.

The Under Graduate final exams commenced on the 16th march 2009. Despite the cold and snow fall the girls saw through the exams. On the 3rd April, Sr. Molly formally announced the formation of Community Outreach Cell to make the students aware of the problems which the people are facing around the college. Keeping this in mind a survey of the near by villages was taken and the village Chamiana was adopted. Ms. Neelkamal Singh, in-charge of the Community Outreach Cell and Dr. Anjali Dewan, Lecturer in the Department of Home Science visited the Govt. senior secondary school which was adopted by the college.

Sr. Molly was invited on the 16th April to the Indian institute of Advance study to attened the 13th S. Radha Krishan memorial lectures. Dr. Hamid Ansari, the Vice-president of India, was the chief speaker. She was also invited to attend the NAAC meeting at the HP Directorate of higher education.

The college closed for the summer vacation on the 15th May 2009. On 1st June, 2009 the college reopened for the new academic session (2009-2010). 5th June the World Environmental Day was celebrated in St. Bede's college under the Indian Federation of UN associations and HP.UNA. The students and teachers of the college actively participated.

   
 

 

The theme of the day was "Your Planet needs you Unite to Combat Climate Change. Sr.Molly was one of the key speakers. Dr. Shonali Sud, Lecturer in the Department of Psychology, also spoke about the harmful effects of Global warming.

On 8th June, 2009 the entrance test and interview for the teacher training Course was held. 189 candidates applied and out of which 25 were selected for this academic year.

As usual the college had its election for session 2009-2010 in the month of July.

The University results of the students were good as always. We secured the following positions in the university.

B.Sc.III -3rd Rank

B.A.III (Eco H)- The first 10 Ranks

B.A.III (Geo H)- 1,2, 4, 5, 6, 9 Ranks.

B.A.III (Eng H) - 2, 3, 7, 8 Ranks.

BCAIII - 6th and 9th Ranks.

CBSE class XII topers of 2008-09 of HP were our students Ms.Megha and Ms.Alisha. On the 14th July, we had the oath taking ceremony. The solemn function ended with the student council taking their responsibility.

The seniors welcomed the freshers to the Bedian family on 17th July. Pof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister of HP was the chief guest. Ms. Meenal Thakur of class XI was crowned as Ms. Fresher followed by Ms.Kritika Thakur and second runner up Ms.Tenzin from the same class XI.

An awareness campaign was conducted in the college on 29th July by young HAS, IAS, IPS officers giving valuable guidelines on how to prepare for the civil service exams. A similar presentation by the Bull's eye was made in the college. They provided the students with valuable information as to how to prepare for various MBA entrance exams such as MAT, SNAP, FMS, ICFAI, HPCI, ZAT etc. .


Classes XI & XII had their Parent-Teacher's meet on the 8th August. There was a good response from the parents. They appreciated and welcomed such type of interactions.

The World breast feeding week was celebrated in the college from 1st to the 7th August. A slogan writing competition was organized by the community outreach cell in collaboration with the cultural society to create awareness about the importance of breastfeeding.

The Community Outreach Cell organized a lecture on 'Swine Flue' by Dr. Swati Patial, a known gynecologist of Shimla, regarding the causes, symptoms, treatment, prevention and precautions to be taken to save oneself from Swine Flue.

As usual the college celebrated the 63rd Independence Day with variety of programmes. A FAEA unit of the college conducted a one-day 'Workshop' on 21, August. It was attended by 106 participants from undergraduate classes.

There was a one-day seminar for the out going 3rd year students by Prof. Jayakar Chellaraj, a retired principal from Bishop Hiber college Trichi ( Tamil Nadu). It was followed by a two day seminar for the teaching and non-teaching staff. He spoke on the awesome responsibility to be a teacher as well as the responsibility of the non-teaching staff.

The NSS unit of the college had its Tree Plantation programme. The girls planted two hundred saplings.

On 3rd September an Inter ship folder making exhibition was organized by the Community Outreach Cell in the college auditorium. The folders were made by recycled paper which was manufactured in the recycling unit of the college.

Teachers Day was celebrated on 5th September. The students came out with their talents and potentials to show their deep love and regards for their teachers in the form of awards.

There was a Parent Teacher meeting was held on 12th September 2009. The response was very positive, 264 parents of undergraduate students attended it. Followed by elections and formation of the PTA for the first time in the college.


14th September saw the celebrations of 'Hindi Diwas'. The four Ships had their competition on One Act Play.

On 16th September in collaboration with the Lion's Club of Shimla, and IGMC, the college organized a Blood Donation camp, where more than 100 students and staff donated blood for a good cause. The MLA of Shimla Mr.Suresh Bhardwaj inaugurated the camp and appreciated the students and the institution for such a great act.

2nd October being a holiday, Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated on 1st October with great fervor and enthusiasm. A very vivid power point presentation was given by Neha Kondal, a student of B.Sc Ist year about various aspects of Gandhiji's life.

A two day Inter-College Festival- 'Serendipity 2009' was organized by the college on 5th and 6th of October. 15 colleges from HP, Chandigarh, Dehra Dun participated in the event. Chief Guest for the first day was Ms. Harinder Hira IAS, an ex-Bedian. She released the college Brochure. The second day witnessed a festive mood all around the campus. The chief guest for the morning session was Dr. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Hon' Vice- chancellor of HPU. In the after noon the Hon' Education Minister Mr. I.D. Dhiman was welcomed by the students by a snow lion dance. The day ended with prize distribution for the winners and a Jam session. "Serendipity 2009" was a platform for the youth to meet and unearth their talents.

College closed for the Diwali holidays from the 15th to the 22nd October.

Dr. Seema Panwar, General Surgeon from IGMC and also an ex-Bedian has graciously offered her services to medically examine the students and staff of our college. She will be visiting the college every first Wednesday of the month. The College started its House Examination on the 3rd November.

On the 19th November CBSE final practical for the class XII started. Two of our contract teachers,Ms. Aparna (dep.of Eng) and Ms. Shalini (dep.of Geography) left us due to govt. appointment.

1st. December was celebrated as World AIDS day by the Red Ribon Club in the college and was highlighted by various programmes and competitions


As usual on the 12th December the final year students were given a grand farewell by their juniors in the college. Hon'ble Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Shri. Jaya Ram Thakur graced the occasion.

This was followed by the ex- Bedians meet in the evening. It is heartening to know that nearly 55 ex- Bedians from far and near came to the college and were overjoyed to be with their Alma Mater. A formal meeting took place where in office bearers were nominated to further strengthen the net work.

As usual the college had its Christmas message and the Christmas play on the 18th December. Finally on the 23rd December the college closed for the winter holidays.

Students attended seminar outside the college.

In the month of October, 4 of our students, Shreya Verma, Aastha Kapoor, Inderpreet Sidhu and Shivroop Grewal accompanied by Ms. Madu Parmar participated in a four-day National level workshop on " Participation of Youth in the Democratic process" organized by the educational resource Centre, a Delhi based NGO.

Students achievements co-curricular activities:- Nivedita Singha of the second year B.A took part in the Inter College Cross country Race and secured the 2nd position, in the Open Nationals the 8th position , the Women's State 1500 mts. Race 3rd position and 800mts race 2nd position.

avina Chauhan of B.A.II took part in the Badminton Open Championship and won the first prize for under 19 - Single and Double and a second prize for women double. She also participated in the State Badminton Championship in Bilaspur and inter College Badminton Championship in Shimla.

Rashael of class XI arts took part in the Alpine Ski Championship in Italy ,Leleanoi Asian Alpine Ski Championship and attended AFIS Camp in Austria.

Two of our students Apurva Munjal (B.A III) and Ritika Azad (B.AII) performed a Dance Drama on Himachal Pradesh at the time of the inauguration of Gaiety theater. They also represented our state in Delhi for a Youth Exchange programme and performed a Kathak Dance, for the Inter-National Folk Festival they represented State of Himachal Pradesh in Jaipur through its Folk Dance and have attended another Youth Exchange programme held in Gaiety Theater on the 26th November, 2009. Besides these, they also have been giving regular shows for Shimla Doordarshan. Our girls performed a group dance in an Inter-National Folk Dance Competition at Gaiety Theater .




The College Band 'ZEPHYR' gave a performance in the college and took part in the inter college competitions, and also performed in public gatherings.

Some of our other achievements of the year:- Computerization of College Administration and Library Automation.A dynamic step has been taken towards keeping in pace with the advanced technology. The college administrative department has been completely computerized for the purpose of smooth administration, admission procedure, student details, generation of fees, salary, attendance, exams etc. We can say with great pleasure and pride that St.Bede's college has its own full fledged Web site. www.stbedescollege.in.

You will also be happy to know that the library has been entirely computerized. More than 25000 books were manually checked, classified, labeled and stacked. Library has four computers .Two for the students and two for the librarians. They can search and brows for the books in the e-catalogue. Besides this, a Photostat-machine has also been installed in the library for the use of students and staff.

A new canteen ( three storey) building is built for the students and the staff. Aqua-guard drinking water facility is given in three different locations of the college.

A new computer lab is furnished with 35 new computers. Besides this the department of Science, Psychology, sports have computer facilities. Two computers are installed in the staff room for the teachers to fill the daily attendance and exam marks of the students.

The college has also started with a small Herbal Garden in the campus.

Ph.D awarded / Papers published / presented / Seminars/ conferences attended : Ms. Geetanjali Mahindru of English Department is awarded with her Doctorate in English Literature.

Dr. Shonali Sud (lecturer in Psychology) - presented a paper at the 3rd Inter National Community, Work and Family Conference in April 16th-18th 2009 in Utrecht university, The Netherlands. Besides this her other presentations were accepted and published at the11th European Congress of Psychology, Oslo in July 2009, at the 29th Inter National Congress of Psychology in Berlin, Germany and also in the 'Journal of Research: The Bede Athenaeum' Vol.1,2009.



She was also invited to give talks on relevant current issues like, Psychological Issues , Life and environment, etc. on All India Radio.

Dr. Sapna Sharma (Lecturer Department of Physics): attended an Inter National Conference on "Physics education ICPG 2009" at Bangkok from 18th to the 24th October 2009. She also presented a paper which was highly appreciated.

Dr. Anjali Dewan (Department of Home Science): attended an Inter National work shop on "Micronutrients and Child Health" at All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi on 20th to the 23rd October. She also gave a presentation on 'Iron Deficiency Anemia in non pregnant females of Shimla'.

Dr. Anupama Tomar's paper titled "Infrastructural gaps in the delivery of Primary Health care Services in the rural areas of district- Hamirpur, HP" is published in the college Journal 'Bede Athenaeun' Vol.1.2009.

Dr. Sr. Molly's paper titled "Women Who Defend Themselves, Defend the Nation: A Pioneering Mission of Education for Women's Empowerment in North India" is published in the College Journal 'Bede Athenaeum' Vol. I. 2009.

Mr. Ashwini Sharma (Lecturer in Computer science): As a resource person for IT in Refresher and Orientation programmes at Academic Staff College HPU.

Ms. Anuja sharma and Ms. Nandini Pathania attended a FAEA meeting at Bangalore. In the month of May Dr. Anupama Tomar from Department of (Eco) and Dr. Shramja Munjal from the Department of Botany participated in a three day Training course on 'Introduction of choice based Credit and Semester System with Grading" for the Under graduate courses conducted by All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE) in collaboration with UGC in Cochin.

Sr. Molly and Sr. Beena also participated a nine-day seminar on 'Effective Administration in Higher education' conducted by the same.

Ms. Neelkamal and Sr. Elsa attended a colloquium on "Water Conservation" organized by CSR panel of the HP state at hotel Holiday Home in Shimla.

A seminar on sports and co-curricular activities organized in the university was attended by Sr. Molly and Mr. Ajay Sood, the sports Lecturer.



Dr.Anupama Tomar (Dep.of Eco) and Dr. Sangeeta Sarawat (Dept .of Hindi) availed the first spell of UGC's Inter University Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences Associateship at the Institute of Advanced Study Shimla from 1April to 30th April 2009. Dr. Anupama Tomar presented a paper on Economic Analysis of public Health Expenditure in HP and Dr. Sangeeta Saraswat presented a paper on Modern plays and degeneration of values.

On 6th August, Sr. molly was invited to attend a one day conference organized by FAO sponsored workshop on promoting indigenous people's food system for food security and nutrition at Hotel Combermere conducted by HP. Govt. and Himcon.

On 8th September, Sr. Molly, Ms. Neelkamal and Dr. Shramja attended a one-day seminar in the 'Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies' (HPU) on "Climate change in Himalayas" in collaboration with NAVADANYA, Dehra Dun.

Ms. Pooja Verma ( Department of Comm) attended a two day seminar on the 8th and 9th of September on " Global Economic meltdown- repercussions and remadies." Organized by the department of Commerce H.P.U.

Dr. Sapna Sharma and Mr. Ashwini Sharma attended one day workshop on 'National Mission on Education through information and communication Technology' held on 26th September 2009 at HPU, Shimla. More than 200 participants from all over HP attended this workshop.

Sr. Molly, Dr. Anupama Tomar (Dep. Eco) ,Mr. Ashwini Sharma(Dep. IT) ,Ms. Kavita Kumra (Dep.Comm), attended a one-day National Seminar on " Emerging Trends in Management" at Himalayan institute of management at Kala-Amb ,HP.

Sr. Molly and Dr. Shramja Munjal gave presentation on Live Sciences under the "Star College Scheme" in Delhi. It was held at Govt. of India Ministry of Science and Technology and Department of Biotechnology. 15 colleges were present from different parts of the country. Our Music Department had some performance: Mr. R.K.Singh (Lecturer in Music) had a performance in All India Radio and another public performance at Shimla. He also attended a Music Conference at Jalandhar.

Mr.Kawar Singh also had live performance in the Door Darshan, Shimla. Thank you.
